Project Details
Fred Smith Company served as prime contractor for the Currituck Sound Coastal Resiliency Project, an effort led by the Town of Duck to protect a low-lying section of N.C. 12 from recurring flooding and shoreline erosion.
The project strengthens approximately a quarter mile of roadway and adjacent shoreline north of Duck Village. Crews constructed a living shoreline with nearshore sills to reduce wave energy, restored coastal wetland habitat, and installed a stone revetment to help protect the shoreline and highway.
Roadway improvements included raising the elevation of N.C. 12, upgrading stormwater drainage, and extending sidewalks and bicycle lanes on both sides of the road. Together, these improvements help reduce flood risk, protect natural habitat, and maintain a reliable connection for residents, visitors, pedestrians, and cyclists.
The project required close coordination among the Town of Duck, funding agencies, property owners, neighborhood associations, and construction teams. It reflects Fred Smith Company’s ability to deliver complex infrastructure where transportation, environmental protection, and community access must work together.
