Who We Are
Fred Smith Company is a North Carolina asphalt paving and heavy civil construction contractor. We produce asphalt and build roadways, bridges, runways, and site infrastructure for public- and private-sector projects across the state.

From C.C. Mangum to Fred Smith Company
Our story began in 1927, when Cleve and Callie Mangum founded C.C. Mangum Company in North Carolina. Over the decades, the business grew from a local contractor into an established asphalt paving and heavy civil construction company. The Smith family acquired C.C. Mangum in 2009, and the business soon took the Fred Smith Company name.
In 2011, Fred Smith Company became part of Construction Partners (Nasdaq: ROAD), a family of companies across the Southeast. The relationship gives our teams access to broader resources and shared expertise, strengthening our ability to deliver dependable projects and support our employees.
Day-to-day decisions remain with local leadership, allowing us to grow while staying connected to the people, customers, and communities that have shaped the business for generations.
