I-40 Pavement Rehabilitation

Project Details

Fred Smith Company provided asphalt paving for Crowder Construction on NCDOT’s I-40 pavement rehabilitation project between Wade Avenue and I-440/U.S. 1 in Raleigh. Work began in November 2022 and was completed in June 2024.

Crews placed more than 41,000 tons of asphalt across both directions of the interstate. The work included roadway widening, asphalt overlays, and an ultra-thin bonded wearing course designed to improve pavement performance and extend the life of the roadway.

Completing this work on a heavily traveled interstate required careful planning, traffic control, and coordination among project teams. The improvements provide motorists with a smoother, more durable driving surface along an important connection in the Triangle.
