Pinehurst Resort, LLC proudly announced the launch of its latest masterpiece, Pinehurst #10, marking the resort’s first expansion in almost thirty years. This new course, envisioned by the acclaimed designer Tom Doak, integrates seamlessly with the natural topography of North Carolina, showcasing native wiregrass, panoramic landscapes, and remarkable elevation variances reaching 75 feet. Beyond introducing an exceptional golf course, this extensive project also included critical infrastructure developments such as new access roads, a railroad crossing, and essential facilities including a Pro Shop, Maintenance Building, and Halfway House.

To execute this ambitious undertaking, CT Wilson selected Fred Smith Company for the infrastructure component, which entailed extensive land preparation over 30 acres, the establishment of wet utilities, and the construction of roads, sidewalks, and multi-use pathways. Despite the initial projection of a one-year timeline for completion from the subcontract issuance in September 2023, a request was made to expedite the project. Encouraged by Pinehurst Resorts and CT Wilson, Fred Smith Company committed to an accelerated deadline of April 3, 2024, to ensure the course’s readiness ahead of the 2024 US Open. This revised schedule represented a significant challenge, considering the scope of work and numerous design adjustments during the construction process.

Fred Smith Company, leveraging its dedicated project teams across various specialties—surveying, utilities, grading, and paving—successfully met the revised April 2024 deadline. This accomplishment was met with accolades from both Pinehurst Resorts and CT Wilson, demonstrating Fred Smith Company’s adeptness at managing complex projects within tight deadlines. The collaboration among Fred Smith Company’s teams, the CT Wilson Management Team, and the Pinehurst Resort Team was key in realizing the vision of a world-class golf destination.

This project’s successful completion, characterized by stellar performance and adherence to a tight schedule, opens doors to future opportunities for Fred Smith Company. It highlights the company’s unique ability to undertake and fulfill demanding contracts within narrower time frames than any local competitor, given the project’s scope and the accelerated timeline imposed by the client and general contractor.

Pinehurst #10 is set to be recognized as a leading global golf course, and Fred Smith Company is honored to have played a role in its creation. This involvement ensures that countless golf enthusiasts will enjoy a course that not only offers a competitive edge but also enchants with its careful integration into the surrounding landscape.

King Asphalt recently completed the SC-153 N road construction project in Pickens County, South Carolina. This comprehensive undertaking aimed to enhance the SC-153 N roadway by implementing various improvements and upgrades.

The scope of work included the following essential tasks:

Shoulder Widening: The project involved widening the shoulder of the SC-153 N roadway, allowing for improved safety and better accommodation of vehicles.

8” FDP (Full Depth Patching): A total area of 5,900 square yards underwent 8-inch full-depth patching. This process addressed any underlying structural issues, ensuring a solid foundation for the subsequent layers of pavement.

2” Milling: Approximately 55,232 square yards of the existing surface underwent 2-inch milling. This step removed the worn-out asphalt layer, creating a smooth base for the upcoming overlay.

Surface C (Leveling & Drives): A total of 338 tons of Surface C materials were utilized to level the roadway and enhance driveways. This step contributed to a smoother driving experience and improved accessibility for residents and businesses along SC-153 N.

Surface B (Mainline): Approximately 6,075 tons of Surface B materials were used for the mainline paving. Surface B is known for its durability and resistance to wear and tear, making it ideal for high-traffic areas.

Borrow: A total of 278 cubic yards of borrow materials were utilized to fulfill the project requirements. Borrow materials are often used to supplement existing materials and ensure proper roadbed compaction.

Pavement Design: The project followed an 8-inch patching design and 2-inch uniform milling. Additionally, 220 pounds per square yard (PSY) of HMA (Hot Mix Asphalt) Surface B was used for the final pavement layer.

To minimize disruption to traffic, the project was carried out exclusively during nighttime hours, with lane closure restrictions from 8 PM to 6 AM. This approach allowed for efficient completion while minimizing inconvenience to motorists.

Some project highlights include:

Completion within approximately four weeks, showcasing King Asphalt’s dedication to timely project execution.

SC-153 N serves as a crucial connector road from I-185 in Powdersville, SC (Greenville County) into Easley, SC. The contracted section covered a distance of 1.39 miles and formed part of the 10-mile total stretch.

The roadway features a four-lane divided highway configuration with a grass median, nine intersections, six commercial drives, and one residential drive.

Through the successful completion of the SC-153 N road construction project, King Asphalt has enhanced the safety, functionality, and overall quality of this important roadway in Pickens County, South Carolina.
