The N.C. Department of Transportation and N.C. Turnpike Authority has awarded the first of two contracts to Flatiron-Fred Smith Company as a joint venture to construct the second phase of the Complete 540 Project in southern Wake County. This significant development aims to create a high-speed toll facility with six lanes, reaching speeds of 70 mph. It will extend the Triangle Expressway from south of Rock Quarry Road to Interstate 87/U.S. 64/U.S. 264.
The Complete 540 Project’s second phase is the vital link needed to fully complete the 540 loop around the greater Raleigh area. Its completion will have a significant impact on transportation and connectivity in southern Wake County. This project is a substantial investment in local infrastructure and has the potential to drive economic growth and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.
Flatiron Construction and Fred Smith Company’s joint venture forms a strong partnership for this project. While Flatiron Construction will handle the overall project’s infrastructure needs, Fred Smith Company will specialize in road construction and paving. The division of roles ensures successful project completion, with each company executing its strengths.
This infrastructure contract will be a landmark achievement for North Carolina. It signals a future of improved connectivity, reduced traffic congestion, and enhanced transportation infrastructure for southern Wake County. The project is expected to open to traffic in 2028 and will have a long-lasting positive impact on the community.
