Fred Smith Company, in a joint venture with Flatiron, has been selected by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) for a significant Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC) project in Moore County. The $100+ million project is set to prepare the Pinehurst area for the upcoming U.S. Open Championships at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club.
This project marks a major effort in developing infrastructure. It focuses on improving safety and transportation flow in Southern Pines, Aberdeen, and Pinehurst through extensive roadway enhancements on NC-5, US-15/501, and US-1. Despite the added complexity of aligning with the timing of the 2024 and 2029 U.S. Open Championships, Flatiron and Fred Smith Company are equipped to manage construction schedules effectively.
The collaboration between Fred Smith Company and Flatiron brings together two powerhouses of the construction industry. Both companies bring unique strengths, promising a robust execution of this time-sensitive project. This is Fred Smith Company’s and Flatiron’s first CM/GC project with NCDOT, marking a significant milestone for the companies.
The U.S. Open Championship is one of the most prestigious golf tournaments globally, attracting thousands of visitors to the host site. The 2024 Championship will mark the first time in over a century that the USGA has awarded four U.S. Opens to a single location within 25 years. With such a significant event on the horizon, efficient, reliable infrastructure is paramount. The project undertaken by the Fred Smith Company and Flatiron JV will ensure that Pinehurst is ready to welcome golf enthusiasts worldwide.
As we embark on this journey, we are excited about its opportunities and challenges. We look forward to working closely with NCDOT and contributing to the success of the U.S. Open Championships. This project, once completed, will stand as a testament to our dedication, resilience, and excellence in delivering high-quality construction services.
Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project!
